SEYMOUR, Ind. — A Seymour man was arrested this week for neglect in the death of his six-week-old son.
Investigators say on March 27, Joseph Michael-Wayne Scott fell asleep in a recliner while holding the baby. A family member woke him up and noticed the child wasn't breathing. Medics responded to the home after someone called 911 and tried to save the baby, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
State police detectives from the Versailles post investigated the child's death for two months and determined Scott had methamphetamine and marijuana in his system at the time of the incident.
After reviewing the case, prosecutors charged Scott, 31, with Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death, a Level 1 Felony. He was taken into custody Thursday and transported to the Jackson County Jail.
Court records show a judge set Scott's bond at $10,000 and scheduled a jury trial for December.
State police were assisted in their investigation by the sheriff's department, EMS, coroner's office and prosecutor's office in Jackson County, as well as Indiana State Excise Police and the Indiana Department of Child Services.
