INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - We're hearing from the family of one of two people gunned down outside a gas station early Monday morning.
"My nephew or that young lady did not deserve to die like that," said Netrice Tate. "They basically ambushed my nephew."
Trevon Harris, 26, and Toshika Boler, 32, were killed in the incident at 34th St. and N. Keystone Ave. just after midnight.
Harris was pronounced dead at the scene. Boler died later at a hospital.
The shootings make no sense to their families.
"It was a shock to us,” Tate said. “We are all trying to hold onto each other. We are trying to be there for my sister because it's surreal.”
Crime scene technicians took photos of the many bullet holes that riddled the side of their car. There were dozens of evidence markers showing the location of the shell casings found at the scene.
"They basically ambushed my nephew," Tate said. "To me, it was like hit-style, the way that they killed my nephew."
His aunt said Trevon mostly hung out with family.
"Every time we had a family function we asked 'are you coming?' He would be like 'I have to see if I have to work.'"
IMPD investigators hope security video from the gas station helps identify the shooter, as does the victims' families, who never expected this kind of violence to hit so close to home.
They had a message for the suspects.
"Think about it. You killing someone that looks just like you. What you are putting your family through? Imagine what your family would be going through."
There have been 133 murder so far this year. At this time in 2016, that number was 126. Four deaths from the weekend have been ruled homicides.
