Eric Taylor's family reacts to IMPD officer-involved shooting video

Taylor was shot and killed by police on Sept. 19 after investigators say a woman told dispatchers her ex-boyfriend was following her car and had a gun.

INDIANAPOLIS — It's been two days since IMPD released the edited body camera video from the Sept. 19 police shooting that left 37-year-old Eric Taylor dead.

Taylor's family said they don't believe the footage released by IMPD gives a full picture of what happened.

"Everybody is going to have their opinion. I'm not scared of judgment because I know my son. He didn't deserve it," said Taylor's mother, Kim Gray.

Taylor was shot and killed by police after investigators say a woman told dispatchers her ex-boyfriend was following her car and had a gun.

Police say the woman claimed her family members told her Taylor intended to "kill them all."

But Taylor's family said the woman is not his ex, but his current girlfriend of several years. They said the woman never thought it would end with her losing the father of her four kids.

"There were no anger issues. He was not a guy we were worried about harming himself or his kids," said his cousin, Keith Taylor.

"I talk to their mom every day. She told me if she could just go back, she would have never called the police. It's a shame that you want help from them but you're afraid to call them," said Gray.

Police said after finding Taylor, he exited his car holding a cell phone and a gun. His mother said she's watched the unedited video four times.

"It was heartbreaking to see your child die over and over again," she said.

After watching it, she said she believes he was only holding his cell phone. She wishes the police had done more to de-escalate the situation.

Now, the family said they're looking for justice and accountability and want charges filed against the officers involved.
