12-year-old boy, 2 teens injured in shooting in northern Indiana

Elkhart police say the boy was found with a gunshot wound, and two other teens were found shot at a home a few blocks away Saturday night.

ELKHART, Ind. — Police in northern Indiana are investigating after three minors, including a 12-year-old, were injured in a shooting Saturday evening.

According to a social media post from the Elkhart Police Department, shortly before 9 p.m. March 23, officers were called to the 300 block of Jackson Place in downtown Elkhart on a report of a shooting with "multiple injuries."

Officers found a 12-year-old boy with a gunshot wound, who was taken to a local hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, police said.

While still at the scene, officers were notified of two additional victims a few blocks away in the 100 block of North Main Street. Police said a 16-year-old and 17-year-old were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation led police to believe they were shot at the same location as the 12-year-old before running from the scene.

Police said they had not made any arrests in the case, and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Elkhart Police Department at 574-295-7070 or Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP (7867).

Elkhart is roughly 15 miles east of South Bend.
