'I never see cops around here' | Apartment residents react to fatal downtown Indy shooting

A man was killed in a shooting just before 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17 in the 500 block of East Market Street in downtown Indianapolis.

INDIANAPOLIS — Tenants at the E'Laan Apartments in downtown Indianapolis watched from their balconies Sunday afternoon as IMPD cars flooded the street below to respond to a shooting that happened inside their building

Brandon Mendoza said he waited outside the building for an hour before he could get in.

"I was surprised just because I never see cops around here. Well, I do but not this many. There were like, 15-20 police cars in the street," said Mendoza.

Police said a man was shot and killed on the third floor of the building. It's still early in the investigation but they believe a disturbance before the shooting started inside an apartment and spilled out into a hallway or common area.

IMPD said they were there within minutes after the call came in and detained a woman in connection to the shooting. She was taken to the IMPD Homicide Office, according to police.

"We are not looking for anyone else at this point. We believe this is an isolated incident and we do have a person of interest detained," said IMPD Officer William Young.

Detectives are still investigating the relationship between the man and the woman, but officers believe they knew each other. They are also still investigating who made the 911 call, whether this was a domestic violence dispute and if the victim lived in this apartment building.

Mendoza said it's just an unfortunate situation.

"That's terrible. I would hate for that to happen to anyone I know. That's really unfortunate," he said.

An unfortunate and hopefully rare incident for this community.

"Downtown continues to be one of our safest districts. Our agency, Chief Bailey stated before, is geared towards reducing violent crime," said Young.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Detective Christopher Edwards at the IMPD Homicide Office by calling 317-327-3475 or emailing Christopher.Edwards@indy.gov. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
