INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department released an edited video of a deadly shooting involving officers and Indiana State Police troopers on Sept. 26, 2023.
The shooting happened in the area of East 40th Street and North Keystone Avenue. Members of the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force stopped a car in which a man they were investigating was riding. Police said at the time that man, 42-year-old Darmon Graves Jr., got out of the car and shot at investigators, who returned fire.
Graves was shot and killed. No one else was reported injured in the incident.
A handgun was recovered at the scene, near where Graves fell.
In the video released by IMPD Friday, Feb. 23, which was recorded from a drone, a woman can be seen exiting the vehicle from the driver's side with her arms raised. As she walked away from the car, toward police, Graves can be seen quickly running from the passenger side. Though his body is blurred in the video, he can be seen raising what police said was the handgun in his right hand.

Multiple shots are fired at Graves, who fell to the ground on the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The female driver was initially detained but later released after an interview with investigators.
Indiana State Police is investigating the incident, with assistance from IMPD, according to police. IMPD's Internal Affairs unit will conduct a separate investigation. Then, a civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will review the incident after the criminal process concludes, police said.
Two IMPD officers and an ISP trooper were placed on administrative leave, per procedure, following the shooting.
