44-year-old man killed in downtown Indy shooting; 'person of interest' detained

The incident happened just before 11 p.m. Saturday near East Washington and Alabama streets.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting downtown Saturday night. 

According to IMPD, just before 11 p.m. June 22, officers responded to a report of the incident at the intersection of East Washington and Alabama streets, near the Julia M. Carson Transit Center in downtown Indianapolis. 

When officers arrived, they found a man who was shot. Medics took the man to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the man as 44-year-old Dontae Marcel Clark.

Officers detained a man as a "person of interest," and he was also taken to a local hospital to be checked out. According to IMPD, the suspect ran down Washington Street before he was detained, leading to several temporary road closures in the area.

Police say officers located a firearm and narcotics on the person of interest and believe he is responsible for the incident. According to IMPD, the person of interest has not been arrested for the homicide, but instead for "narcotics and firearms-related offenses."
