Domestic violence advocates react to deadly northwest Indy shooting

Advocates say homicides related to domestic violence have gone down since 2021, but they continue to see guns in abusers' hands.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating a deadly shooting that happened early Saturday morning on the city's northwest side. Police told 13News this stemmed from a domestic disturbance.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m. June 1, police responded to the 3000 block of Armory Drive, which is near West 30th Street and North White River Parkway East Drive, on a report of a person shot.

When first responders arrived, they found a woman who had been shot and pronounced her dead at the scene.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 26-year-old Amber L. Cooley.

An IMPD spokesperson said police found a gun inside the home, and officers arrested a man for his involvement in the incident. Investigators believe Cooley and the suspect were parents of an infant who was there when the shooting happened.

"This kid is never going to know their mom, and their father has been stripped away as well," IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson said.

Investigators believe this started as a domestic disturbance.

Danyette Smith, with the Indy Public Safety Foundation, told 13News that homicides related to domestic violence have gone down since 2021, but they continue to see guns in abusers' hands.

"If we could just continue to take the guns out of the hands of abusers and out of the homes where the abuse occurs, then we can get a better chance at reducing that homicide," Smith said.

Smith said while every situation is different, domestic violence prevention groups will continue to be out and intervene.

"Domestic violence, unfortunately, is unpredictable in households, and we just don't know if a homicide is going to occur, but we do know there is an increase chance when guns are in the home," Smith said.
