Indianapolis man was shot and killed after he slammed a door, according to court documents

Matthew Stevens died at the hospital after being shot on 30th Street on Nov. 4, 2024.

INDIANAPOLIS — Tre Dunns, of Indianapolis, is charged with murder for his role in the shooting and killing Matthew Stevens Nov. 4 on the city's near northwest side.

The shooting happened in the 600 block of West 30th Street, near the exit to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street from Interstate 65, just south of Crown Hill Cemetery.

Stevens was found in the middle of the road shortly after 8:15 a.m. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition but died within a few hours.

According to court documents, several witnesses reported seeing Stevens fighting with two men before the shooting. The two men were then seen running away.

Police learned the FBI was also surveilling the area, and were able to learn where the men went. Police said the men eventually got into a car with a woman, who drove them to the area of 29th Street and Capitol Avenue.

Police interviewed the woman, who initially said she was woken up by her daughter and eventually admitted she drove the men. The woman said that Stevens had come to her house to buy fentanyl from one of the two men.

The woman said the man didn't have as much fentanyl as Stevens wanted, so he left, slamming the door behind him. The woman said the men felt that was "disrespectful" and followed Stevens to attack him.

The woman said she was locking her door behind them when she heard gunshots. She said Dunns entered the house and yelled, "We got to go."

An IMPD SWAT team attempted to arrest Dunns at his apartment, but officers found it empty. A witness in the area said Dunns must have been "tipped off." He again identified Dunns.

Dunns was then arrested as part of an investigation into another shooting.

Dunns told police the third man involved was the one that thought Stevens was disrespectful and was the one who shot Stevens. He accused the third man of shooting Stevens over $20 and said he "couldn't believe it."

Police then found another surveillance camera in the area, which they say showed the entire event.

According to police, the video shows Dunns and another man attack Stevens. Stevens got away and attempted to run, but Dunns and the other man caught him. When Stevens got away again, this time running toward the road, police say the video shows the third man shoot Stevens in the back twice.

The third man, known as "Clyde" or "Little C," has not been identified.

Anyone with additional information on this case is asked to call Crimestoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS.
