INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man has been charged after he allegedly raped a woman and strangled her husband with an extension cord.
James Jerard Taylor was formally charged Nov. 12 with one count of rape, two counts of criminal confinement, one count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury and one count of strangulation.
According to court documents, IMPD officers responded on Nov. 8 to a home near 10th Street and North Tibbs Avenue on Indianapolis' near west side for a report of a rape in progress.
A woman told officers she was raped by Taylor and her husband was strangled by Taylor with an extension cord, according to the documents. Taylor was detained at the scene by officers.
The woman told detectives she met Taylor the night before at a gas station on Tibbs Avenue, where he said he had "good weed." The woman said he invited Taylor back to her home to smoke the marijuana. There, the woman said, he quickly changed and demanded money before threatening her, according to the documents.
According to the documents, the woman told police Taylor then raped her and choked her husband. She said she attempted to fight back while Taylor was choking her husband, but was unsuccessful. The woman told detectives Taylor used a cellphone to record the attack, according to the docs.
Taylor told detectives a "rambling" story about the incident, according to the court docs, and denied raping the woman or injuring the man.
The man later told detectives he was attacked by Taylor, who he said hit him on the head and kicked his head, face and ribs, and choked him until he was unconscious, according to the documents.
The woman told police Taylor threatened to kill her husband if she didn't do as he said, according to the documents.
Online court records indicate an initial hearing for Taylor is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 13.
