COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus police arrested a suspected drunk driver early Saturday morning.

Around 12:40 a.m. on Jan. 27, a Columbus police officer clocked a car going 111 mph north on Indianapolis Road, near Lowell Road. The posted speed limit in that area is 55 mph.

Police said when the officer caught up with the suspect car, the 24-year-old driver of the car turned off the car's headlines as he went south on Indianapolis Road.

Officers caught up to the suspect car after approximately three miles near 3rd and Lindsey streets and were able to stop the car, with the assistance of Bartholomew County sheriff's deputies.

Police said the suspect had bloodshot and glassy eyes, as well as his breath smelling like alcohol. According to police, there was an open alcoholic beverage inside the suspect's car.

Officers then gave the suspect several field sobriety tests and later a breathalyzer, which registered 0.137%, which is 1.5 times more than the legal limit in Indiana.

Police took the suspect to the Bartholomew County Jail on the following preliminary charges:

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated (endangerment)
  • Resisting law enforcement with a vehicle
  • Reckless driving
  • Criminal recklessness

The Bartholomew County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decisions.
