INDIANAPOLIS — (Editor's note: Story has been updated to reflect the shooting victim was a man, not a woman as earlier reported.)
A man was killed Thursday in a shooting at Castleton Square Mall.
The coroner has identified him as 23-year-old Trai Terrell.
Police say officers were on patrol at the mall when they heard gunshots. Officers went to the scene and saw Terrell on the ground and people running. The shooting happened at the west end of the mall, near the JCPenney store.
Officers administered first aid to Terrell, who was in critical condition inside the mall, but later passed away after being transported to Methodist Hospital.
A male suspect is reportedly in custody. According to 13News reporter Steve Jefferson, the man admitted to the shooting, though no arrests have been made at this time..
A call to 911 reported several young males were shooting at each other inside the mall.
"We do believe this was an isolated incident. This was not something where someone randomly came into the mall shooting," said IMPD Ofc. Genae Cook.
The manager of a store inside the mall said people suddenly started running when the shooting started. Customers in the mall's food court also reported hearing the gunshots.
Police say weapons were fired right inside the mall's entrance, but there were also shell casings found outside the mall. An SUV in the parking lot had a window shattered by apparent gunfire.
Jennifer Ramsey was working in the mall at the time of the shooting. She wasn't near where the shots were fired, but said the experience was definitely rattling.
"You feel like you're safe in your job, but you're not if people are on the other side of the building, there are shootings, you know what I mean?" she said.
Shoppers had the same feeling. Brenton Montgomery came to the mall, only to find crime tape stretched across the parking lot.
"It's beyond crazy. We need more security, we need more police. Something has to change, because if people are still doing this, it's only going to get worse before it gets better," Montgomery said.
Cook stressed that the incident was between people who knew each others and police don't want people to be afraid, but still, the violence is unacceptable.
"This is a person's life and someone died tonight and this is a member of our community," she said. "So no matter what, we need to do it for him and for his family and for his friends."
