LOGANSPORT, Ind. — Most of the people driving into Logansport usually live there or know someone does.
But on Monday, police say five undocumented immigrants drove into the city and picked up a 14-year-old girl they never met.
"It's an eye opener, from what I deal with my kids to what I see out here," Logansport Police Det. Jason Rozzi said.
Rozzi said the sergeant handling the case called him in the middle of the night to ping the girl's phone or, in other words, use her phone to locate her.
"I mean, I don't think they would have found her without it. So, yeah, it was a huge part of that whole scenario," Rozzi said.
That ping helped police in Indiana locate the girl in Missouri just hours after she left.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. Justin Dunn said after Logansport police notified them of where the girl was at, a trooper was able to pull the car over on U.S. 36.
"Obviously, they separate individuals during the course of that traffic stop to get everybody's side of the story and who they are and where they're going or where they're traveling to, and that was obviously done in that investigation," Dunn said. "Through that, the person being in question as being reported missing, their identity was identified and confirmed to the trooper by an interview with that individual."
Both Dunn and Rozzi said the girl had been communicating with one of the guys through social media.
They ask parents, no matter where you live, to keep an eye on your kids' phones.
At last check, police said the girl's dad went to go pick her up from Missouri to bring her back home.
