VINCENNES, Ind. — Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating after the body of a 5-year-old girl was recovered Thursday afternoon from the Wabash River in Vincennes.
Around 2:40 p.m. June 6, someone called 911 on a report of a missing child who had been playing in the Wabash River at Kimmell Park in Knox County.
Multiple agencies responded and started search efforts by boat, dive teams and sonar.
Around 7:15 p.m., divers recovered the girl's body near the park's boat ramp.
As a result of the investigation, officers arrested the 26-year-old stepmother from Vincennes on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent.

The Knox County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decision.
Other agencies assisting in the investigation included the Knox County Sheriff’s Department, Vincennes City Police, Vincennes University Police Department, Indiana State Police, Vincennes Township Fire Department, Good Samaritan Emergency Medical Services, and Knox County Emergency Management Agency.
