Beech Grove gun store targeted again by thieves

Three teenagers allegedly tried to steal guns from Beech Grove Firearms, but they were quickly apprehended by police.

INDIANAPOLIS — Beech Grove Firearms has been targeted in another burglary but this time they didn't get what they were aiming for.

Greg Burge, the owner of Beech Grove Firearms, woke up Friday morning to some frustrating news of another attempted burglary at his shop — the third one in 12 months. He looked at his surveillance cameras to see how it all went down.

You can see the three suspects on the surveillance video jumping the back fence, wearing hoodies and masks and carrying what appears to be tools to get through the back door.

"It's a quick easy fix, at least that's what they thought. So they come in and steal as many guns as they could shove in their backpacks" said Burge.

But this time, they didn't make it that far. Beech Grove Firearms is located just 100 yards from the police station. Officers were able to catch the suspects while in the act.

"Beech Grove Police Department acted quickly and caught them. No damage. No firearms stolen. On my side it's a win-win," said Burge.

While Burge is thankful for the quick action from the police, he said it's frustrating that his business was targeted again by thieves. Just last April, thieves drove an SUV through the store and stole 41 guns.

"Firearms in the wrong hands result in bad things happening. These are not people stealing guns to collect them. They are stealing to sell them to other people that are probably prohibited," said Burge.

Since then, Burge has made several re-enforcements to deter it from happening again. But he questions, 'What more can he do?'

"We have a steel door upfront. The building is alarmed. We have 27 cameras and we are right next to the police station," said Burge.

According to the police report, two of the suspects in Friday's robbery attempt are 17 years old and the third is 18 years old. At the end of the day, Burge said it all comes down to choices.

"I just say, 'Consequences have actions,' and I trust in the legal system to do that. The rest is in God's hands," said Burge.

13News reached out Beech Grove police about the case and possible charges against those suspects, but have not yet received a response.
