INDIANAPOLIS — A home surveillance camera captured video of two people stealing Monique Taylor's car on the east side of Indianapolis early Tuesday morning.
The video also shows one of the people pointing a gun directly at Taylor's home.
Two people can be seen on Ring doorbell video checking the handles of Taylor's Kia near 21st Street and Arlington Avenue around 4:30 a.m. When they realize it's locked, one of them works on taking out the passenger side window.
The other person makes their way to the front door, gun in hand. As the pair walks back down the driveway, the armed person turns around, puts both hands on the gun and points it at the home.
"It's a guy standing on my front porch pointing a gun at my house. Like, for instance, if I come out or open the door or say anything, they were going to start shooting at my house," Taylor said.
After a few minutes, one of the individuals is able to get the car started and drive off.
"I looked out the window and my car was gone and I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, my car is gone,' or whatever, so I just start panicking and start screaming or whatever," said Taylor.
Taylor said she called police and her insurance company. She said because she only has liability insurance, it's up to her to figure out how to get around.
"I'm probably going to have to get a rental and it's going to suck. I don't have money like that saved to even really try to go get a car or a rental like that or whatever, so I don't know what I'm going to do," Taylor explained.
She asks if anyone sees a 2013 Kia Optima with the license plate TEL949 to call police.
IMPD says about 1,200 Kias were stolen in 2023. As for this year, the department is working on getting 13News reporter Chase Houle that number, but in the meantime, they want to remind drivers not to leave anything of value in their car and to use a steering wheel lock if needed.
And while this may be obvious, as the weather gets colder, don't leave your car running unattended.
