ANDERSON, Indiana — A judge sentenced an Anderson man to more than 15 years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to a bank robbery in 2021.
Raymond Johnson, 35, had pleaded guilty to bank robbery and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.
According to court documents, Johnson entered a First Merchants Bank in Anderson the afternoon of Sept. 23, 2021, with a handgun. He pulled the gun out, jumped onto the teller counter and ordered employees to the ground before demanding money. Court documents say he also fired one shot into the teller cabinet. Nobody was injured in the incident.
Johnson left the bank with $13,585 in cash. Police arrested him the following morning during a traffic stop. Officers stopped Johnson's gold Chevrolet Monte Carlo as it matched the description of the suspect's vehicle in the robbery.
"This violent criminal didn’t just rob a bank of customer deposits, he robbed everyone inside the bank of their sense security and peace," said Zachary A. Myers, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. "Gun crimes have a negative impact on our entire community, and the sentence imposed today demonstrates that this conduct simply not be tolerated. The people of Anderson are safer with this defendant off of our streets, thanks to the hard work of the FBI, the Anderson Police Department and our federal prosecutors."
In addition to the prison sentence, U.S. District Court Judge Matthew P. Brookman ordered Johnson to be on probation for five years following his release from prison, as well as pay back the $13,585 he stole from the bank.
