INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - A 53-year-old man was left in critical condition Sunday night after he was shot at the exact same place where a 16-year-old was shot and killed Saturday night.
Witnesses say they were in the middle of a prayer vigil for 16-year-old Theothus Carter, the victim of Saturday's shooting, when gunfire rang out at a Conoco gas station around 9:20 p.m. Sunday at 16th and Gladstone on Indianapolis' near-east side.
Metro Police say Donald Baker of Indianapolis remained hospitalized in serious condition Monday morning from the second shooting.
Detectives believe Baker unintentionally struck another vehicle of someone attending the prayer vigil. Police say an angry mob confronted Baker and, it is believed, someone in that group shot and critically wounded him.
Detectives are trying to determine who may have shot Baker.
"If we could get people to just call," said IMPD Commander Michael Jefferson Sunday night. "Call, and if there a witness to the incident, give us a call at homicide and let homicide know so we can try and catch whoever is doing this. Some way, we have to figure out a way to settle our differences without violence. Without guns."
