INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating a shooting that killed one person and injured two others on the east side of Indianapolis Tuesday afternoon.
Around 4 p.m. Feb. 6, officers responded to 5300 block of East 32nd Street, near Emerson and Massachusetts avenues, on a report of a person shot.
Police said two women and one man were wounded. Officers provided medical aid until EMS arrived.
The three were taken to the hospital and 18-year-old Lashelle Hewlit, a senior at Crispus Attucks High School, later died. IMPD said the other two who were shot were in serious condition. Those included Hewlitt's boyfriend, who is still hospitalized, and her mother, Michelle Diggs.
Police are urging the person responsible to contact police.
"Whenever we have a complex case like this, we want to cover every base to make sure, as an agency, we don't miss anything because we want to bring justice to the families who have to deal with this," IMPD Ofc. William Young said. "Number one, turn yourself in, but we are going to do everything we can to take you into custody — everything we can."
Police are looking for evidence and witnesses. There was no information on possible suspects.
Police have increased patrols in the area.
"Our East District commander will do everything he can to provide resources, but not just a police standpoint, but we want to understand why these things are happening in this particular area," Young said.
