JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. — Three juveniles have been questioned in relation to an incident where baseballs and softballs were thrown onto Interstate 65, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office said Monday.
The first incident happened just after 9 p.m. on Nov. 9 when a responding deputy responded to a report of people throwing items off an overpass. While there, they discovered a "large quantity" of baseballs on the road that had to be removed.
The second incident happened just before 7 p.m. on Nov. 25, when the Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of people throwing rocks from the overpass at County Roads 250 S and 600 E onto I-65.
Police said dispatch received multiple 911 calls, including one from a tractor-trailer driver who reported vehicle damage and was waiting for help from Indiana State Police.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said the baseballs and softballs that were thrown were stolen from a local little league organization in Franklin.
This led to the identification and interviews of three juveniles connected to the incidents, police said.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said the case is being referred to the Johnson County Prosecutor's Office for "review and consideration of potential charges."
"This was a troubling incident that caused property damage and could have led to serious injuries," said Sheriff Duane E. Burgess. "We were very fortunate that no one was hurt. The swift and thorough work of our team demonstrates the dedication of our officers to ensuring public safety and holding those responsible accountable."
