26-year-old Indianapolis man arrested in separate murders

IMPD detectives believe a 26-year-old man is behind two deadly shootings that happened in April and May on the northwest and south sides.

IMPD is investigating a deadly shooting that happened around 3:30 p.m. May 6, 2024, near Stop 11 and Railroad roads.

INDIANAPOLIS — A 26-year-old Indianapolis man was arrested on Thursday for his alleged role in two separate murders. 

IMPD officers responded to a report of a car that went off the road and into a yard near West Stop 11 and Railroad roads around 3:30 p.m. May 6.

Officers arrived and determined a man had been shot. Medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 25-year-old Yasar Jamal Oliver Burnett Jr. and said his death was a homicide.

Police said they continued to investigate and were able to identify the 26-year-old man as a suspect in this incident.

(NOTE: 13News does not name suspects until formal charges are filed by prosecutors.)

At the time of his arrest, the man was already in custody for preliminary charges of murder and aggravated assault for a separate case.   

That case was the murder of 19-year-old Ivionte Campbell and aggravated assault of two others

The shooting happened in the 3400 block of Timbersedge Drive, near Guion and Lafayette roads, around 10 a.m. April 25.

Officers arrived and found three men who had been shot. IMPD confirmed one man died at the scene, and two other men were taken to hospitals, one in critical condition and the others' conditions were described as stable.

The Marion County Coroner's Office later identified the man who died as Campbell.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the cases and make the final charging decisions.
