DELAWARE COUNTY, Indiana — A Delaware County judge sentenced 20-year-old man from Anderson for the murder of a Marine veteran in Delaware County in July 2022.

Judge Thomas A. Cannon Jr. sentenced Alexander Geesy, of Anderson, to 66 years in prison — 56 years for murder and 10 additional years for a firearm enhancement.

During the sentencing hearing, the judge called Alexander a "cowardly misfit without a conscious who only gained courage from strapping a gun on his hip."

After the sentencing, Delaware County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Ramirez said, "William Randall Coomer was a veteran and small business owner prior to being shot in the back and murdered by Geesy at Sharp Cemetery in Daleville on July 22, 2022. Hopefully these convictions and this sentence will serve as some justice to the friends and family of Mr. Coomer."

After three hours of deliberation on June 27, a jury convicted Geesy of murder and obstruction of justice.

According to court documents, passengers in two cars had words with 38-year-old Randall Coomer's wife as they went down their street on July 22, 2022. The suspects then parked at the Sharp Cemetery in Daleville.

Court documents say a witness said Coomer and his wife then drove down to the cemetery. Coomer and Ryan Geesy allegedly got into an argument, with Coomer hitting Ryan Geesy. The witness then claims Alexander pulled out a gun and pointed it at Coomer, ordering him to get on the ground and fired a warning shot. The witness said Coomer then tried to get back to his truck as Alexander fired multiple shots at him and saw Coomer fall into a ditch.

According to court documents, the witness said after the shooting, Ryan was worried about warrants he had, and Alexander was concerned he was only 18 and would be going to jail.

Investigators said Coomer was shot in the back and left lying in a ditch.

The suspect vehicles were captured on camera.

Investigators said the suspects left the state and went to Tennessee the day after the shooting, but returned to Indiana and were located by police on July 29, 2022. They were taken into custody in Muncie without incident.

A jury trial for Ryan, on charges of assisting a criminal and obstruction of justice, is scheduled to begin Jan. 21, 2025.

Brandi Zirkle, of Anderson, pleaded guilty to assisting a criminal and obstruction of justice. She was sentenced to three years to the Indiana Department of Correction.

Dawn Schattner, of Anderson, has a change of plea hearing scheduled for Aug. 20. She is facing charges of assisting a criminal, obstruction of justice and neglect of a dependent.
