7 shot, 2 fatally, in 5 hours across Indianapolis on Tuesday

The shootings happened between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Feb. 6.

INDIANAPOLIS — It was a violent Tuesday across Indianapolis. 

IMPD responded to four shootings Feb. 6 between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. In total, seven people were shot, two of whom died from their injuries.

Police also investigating another shooting early Wednesday morning on the city's south side.

East side shooting

IMPD officers responded to a report of a shooting around 4 p.m. Feb. 6 in the 5300 block of East 32nd Street, near Emerson and Massachusetts avenues.

Officers arrived and found two women and one man who had been shot.

Medics took the three people to the hospital, where one of the women later died from her injuries. In an update later Tuesday, police said the other woman was in critical condition and the man was "stable."

Wednesday morning, the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the woman killed as 18-year-old Lashelle Rene Hewlett.

Police have not shared information about a possible suspect or motive at this time.

"Whenever we have a complex case like this, we want to cover every base to make sure, as an agency, we don't miss anything because we want to bring justice to the families who have to deal with this," IMPD Ofc. William Young said. "Number one, turn yourself in, but we are going to do everything we can to take you into custody — everything we can."

Northwest side shooting

IMPD officers responded to a report of a person shot around 7:20 p.m. Feb. 6 in the 5500 block of West 43rd Street, near Moller Road.

Officers arrived and found one person who had been shot. Medics took the victim to a hospital in critical condition.

Police believe the shooting happened on a nearby basketball court.

IMPD has not shared information at this time about a possible suspect or motive.

West side shooting

IMPD officers responded to a report of a shooting around 8:30 p.m. Feb. 6 in the 6900 block of West 38th Street, near Interstate 465.

According to IMPD Capt. Mark McCardia, the shooting happened just inside the front door of VASA Fitness. The gym was full of people when police arrived, he said, leading to a chaotic scene.

Police said the victims, a 22-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, were taken to separate hospitals for treatment. According to McCardia, one of the victims was said to be in good condition, while the other had more serious injuries.

Witnesses said they heard two or three shots fired. Christopher Velez was inside the gym during the shooting. He told 13News when the shots rang out, people began running for cover.

"I was scared for my life, you know," Velez said. "You're never expecting none of this to happen. Not even in, you know, VASA here, you know. It's friendly around here, but it's just crazy man."

Police cleared the fitness center, but said they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public. 

Investigators do not have a good description of the shooter due to the chaotic scene. Anyone with information is asked to come forward and contact IMPD aggravated assault detectives at 317-327-3475.

East side shooting

IMPD officers responded to a report of a person shot around 9 p.m. Feb. 6 in the 4400 block of Priscilla Avenue, near East 44th Street and North Arlington Avenue.

Officers arrived and found a man who had been shot. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The Marion County Coroner's Office will identify the victim once family has been notified.

Police have not shared information at this time about a possible suspect or motive.

South side shooting

IMPD officers responded to a report of a person shot around 1:30 a.m. Feb. 7 in the 3200 Earlswood Lane, near West Southport Road and Interstate 69.

Officers arrived and found a person who had been shot. According to IMPD, the victim is "awake and breathing."

Police have not shared information at this time about a possible suspect or motive.
