BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana State Police say a high-speed chase north of Bloomington ended in a crash that sent the suspect's car flying.

It happened late at night on Thursday, Nov. 21. The 20-year-old driver from Portage, Indiana, was in a red, 2010 Lexus. A trooper tried to pull him over for having an expired license plate.

Instead of pulling over, the driver took off, going more than 100 mph as he tried to lose the trooper.

Around 20 miles north of Bloomington, near the Morgan-Monroe State Forest, the driver hit a guardrail and went flying down the right embankment about 150 feet from the roadway.

The trooper immediately called for fire and EMS assistance and then approached the car to help the driver.

Two other troopers arrived and helped firefighters get the driver out of the wrecked Lexus. As they helped the driver walk back up the roadway, one of the troopers detected "a strong odor of alcoholic beverages."

The trooper started an investigation into whether the driver was intoxicated.

That driver was taken to Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment of the injuries he sustained in the crash.
