INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating a deadly shooting that happened on the city's northeast side Monday morning.
Police responded to a report of a person shot outside of a home in the 6600 block of East 52nd Place, near North Arlington Avenue and East 56th Street, just after 5 a.m. Dec. 25.
Officers arrived and found a woman who had been shot. Medics pronounced her dead at the scene.
The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 24-year-old Shania E. Shaw.
Police said the suspect took off before officers arrived.
Shortly before 9:30 p.m. Monday, IMPD announced they'd arrested 24-year-old Sir Brown in connection with the shooting.
The Marion County Prosecutor's Office filed the following charges against Brown on Jan. 1:
- Murder
- Residential entry
- Domestic battery
- Unlawful carrying of a handgun
According to an arrest report, Brown's father told police he had footage of the shooting from his home surveillance system.
The suspect and Shaw, who was his girlfriend, allegedly dropped their two children off at the suspect's parent's house on Christmas Eve.
The arrest report says Brown and Shaw returned to the house around 4 a.m. on Christmas and fought outside for approximately 45 minutes.
According to the arrest report, the fight went from verbal to physical when the surveillance footage shows Brown's father come outside to try to stop the fight.
Brown's father told police that his son had a gun and threatened to shoot himself, so Brown's father said he went back in his home and locked the door. That's when Brown's father said he heard a gunshot, and Brown allegedly tried to get in the house by kicking the door and shooting at it.
The arrest report says Brown called his mother while detectives were speaking with her. During the call, Brown allegedly admitted to shooting Shaw and said he was going to kill himself.
According to the arrest report, the detectives asked Brown to turn himself in, and he said he couldn't do that unless he could see his mother and children, to which the detectives agreed.
Around 2:30 p.m. on Christmas, Brown's mother told police that she was on her way to the City-County Building so Brown could turn himself in.
When Brown arrived, detectives tried to speak with him, but he immediately requested an attorney.
Police arrested Brown on a preliminary charge of murder.
Brown's initial hearing took place Jan. 2.
"This should not be the scene, nor should this be what our community members wake up to any morning, let alone a holiday morning," IMPD Ofc. Samone Burris said. "This is very, very unfortunate."
