2 charged in connection with deadly 'drug-related robbery' in Avon

Police were called to a home on Glensford Drive, near U.S. 36 and North Avon Avenue, around 7:30 p.m. Jan. 11 on a report of a shooting.

AVON, Ind. — The investigation into the shooting deaths of 20-year-old Samual Oliver and 20-year-old Patrick Day in Avon in January did not end after police alleged they shot and killed each other during a drug-related robbery.

"A lot of people were shocked this happened in our town. It's important people understand in our community in general, these things will happen no matter where we are at," Avon Police Deputy Chief Brian Nugent said.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. Jan. 11 at a home on Glensford Drive, near U.S. 36 and North Avon Avenue. The deaths were the first homicides in Avon since 2022.

Police in Avon, with the help of the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force, recently arrested two people in the case: Day's girlfriend, Olivia Kirksy, and Day's friend, Gavin Bollman.

Nugent said cases like this take time and a lot of resources.

"I also want to make sure we are methodical and intentional in holding all parties responsible for these types of cases and not just allowing the case to stop, simply because two individuals have passed," Nugent said.

13News obtained court documents, which say Kirksy allegedly helped Day set up the drug deal and robbery.

Court docs also claim Bollman gave Day the gun police said Day used to shoot Oliver.

According to court documents, detectives used a search warrant for Bollman's Instagram messages and found evidence that showed he not only allegedly gave Day the gun, but Bollman also knew about the robbery.

Nugent said it doesn't matter that Kirksy and Bollman didn't pull the trigger themselves.

"Whether you are on the scene or not, if you are aware of intentions of these crimes taking place and you facilitate any sort of instrumentation and allow someone to commit those crimes, there's going to be repercussions," Nugent said.

Nugent said the arrests are a bittersweet resolution to a terrible tragedy.

"These are very difficult circumstances, and no one likes to see the fact that several people made bad decisions and a couple of which have lost their lives because of that," Nugent said. "We are really proud our detectives did not give up on the case."

Kirksy and Bollman are being held in the Hendricks County Jail are are both facing two counts of armed robbery.
