CHARLESTOWN, Ind. — Indiana State Police is investigating after one person was injured in an officer-involved shooting at a southern Indiana nature preserve Saturday afternoon.
According to a release from ISP, around 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 24, the Charlestown Police Department received a request for a welfare check of a man, but the man's whereabouts were unknown.
Around 5 p.m., officers found the man's car in the parking lot of the Nine Penny Branch Nature Preserve in Clark County.
Charlestown police officers, Clark County sheriff's deputies and Indiana conservation officers all entered the nature preserve in an attempt to locate the man after being informed he may be armed.
Shortly before 5:30 p.m., officers found the man walking on a trail. The man was allegedly holding a handgun when police located him.
According to ISP, "at some point during the encounter," a Charlestown police officer fired at least one round from their gun, striking the man.
The man was immediately given first aid and then transported to the University of Louisville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Per policy, the officer who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave. ISP says the identity of the man injured will not be released at this time.
Clark County is roughly 100 miles south of downtown Indianapolis.
