IMPD investigating deadly shooting on Indy's east side

Police said the shooting happened in the 2400 block of North Kitley Avenue Thursday morning.

INDIANAPOLIS — One man is dead after a shooting Thursday morning on the east side of Indianapolis.

Police responded to the 2400 block of Kitley Avenue, near Shadeland Avenue and East 21st Street, around 11:45 a.m. on the report of a person shot in a car. Medics pronounced the man dead at the scene. Marion County Coroner's Office identified him as 37-year-old Melvin Hall Jr. and ruled his death a homicide.

Melissa and Yvette Wingfield both live on Kitley Avenue, near where the shooting happened. They said it has left them speechless.

"It's trauma on everyone, even the people not involved because we see ... some are scared because they don't know how to handle it, and we don't know what to do," Melissa said.

Police said the Hall was found dead inside of a silver Pontiac. The street was blocked off for several hours as detectives combed through the scene looking for answers to give to his family and this community.

"A community is devastated. A family has been devastated. A loved one has been lost today. A life has been lost, taken from our community," IMPD Ofc. Samone Burris said.

As police investigated, school buses dropped off children from school. Melissa said she struggled on what to tell her kids when they got home.

"I know they're going to be shaken up. I'm going to have to sit and talk with them because they'll see it," Melissa said, noting how it's unfortunate parents have to worry about having these types of conversations. "Put the guns down. Stop the violence, and let's come together."

Police are still looking for a suspect. They're asking anyone with any information to contact Det. Ryan Clark at IMPD Homicide at 317-327-3475 or by email.
