INDIANAPOLIS — EDITOR'S NOTE: IMPD confirmed a baby, believed to be around 1 year old, was not shot in the incident, despite having injuries and being taken to the hospital to be checked out.
IMPD is investigating after a 19-year-old man was killed and a 19-year-old woman was grazed in a shooting on the east side of Indianapolis Monday night.
The shooting happened in the area of East 12th Street and North Colorado Avenue, near North Sherman Drive, around 10:15 p.m. May 20. Officers responding to the scene found two people who had been shot.
The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but later died from his injuries. On May 21, the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the man killed as 19-year-old Jaden Omarion Thrasher.
The woman had a graze wound. A boy was also injured in the incident but was not hit by the gunfire.
Police did not have information about a possible suspect or motive, but did not believe there was an immediate threat to the general public.
"We need the public's help. Somebody knows something about this. It's not a big secret. Whoever did this was probably with people or would tell somebody or somebody knew they were coming to do it, and need to realize 'holy moly, a baby almost got killed,'" IMPD Capt. Mark McCardia said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call Det. Douglas Morning in the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email him at Douglas.Morning@indy.gov. People can also call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
