IMPD: Man dies following south Indy double shooting; 2nd gunshot victim detained, then released

The shooting happened just before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 4000 block of Independence Drive, near South Meridian Street and Hanna Avenue.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after a man died following a double shooting on Indianapolis' south side early Tuesday.

Around 12:30 a.m. Sept. 3, IMPD officers responded to a report of the shooting in the 4000 block of Independence Drive, just near South Meridian Street and Hanna Avenue.

Officers found a man with gunshot wounds on a back patio of a home. He was taken in critical condition to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, IMPD said in an update Tuesday morning.

The Marion County Coroner's Office will identify the deceased who died once family has been notified.

IMPD is investigating a shooting that happened Sept. 3, 2024, in the 4000 block of Independence Drive.

A short time later, officers responded to a report of a man arriving at Community Hospital South with a gunshot wound.

"This individual was in stable condition and was later released from the hospital," an IMPD spokesperson said Tuesday. "Upon release from the hospital, the victim was detained by officers and later released by detectives."

The spokesperson said it's currently believed the incidents are connected.
