LAWRENCE, Indiana — Police in Lawrence are investigating after a teenager was killed in a shooting Tuesday evening.
The shooting was reported around 8:40 p.m. May 21 in the 4600 block of Birmingham Drive, near East 46th Street and North German Church Road.
A Lawrence Police Department spokesperson said officers responding to a shots fired call found a male under 18 who was shot. He was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition, but was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.
On Wednesday, the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 16-year-old Andre Manuel Lara.
The police spokesperson said two people ran from the scene following the shooting, and officers were working to find them.
"It's very tragic, and we keep seeing it more and more often, that a lot of this stuff around the city in general, it's been a lot of juveniles. It's a shame," LPD Deputy Chief Travis Cline said.
A spokesperson with the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township said Lara was a student at Lawrence Central High School.
"Our greater community continues to be impacted by senseless acts of gun violence and our hearts to go out to his family and friends," the district spokesperson said in a statement. "Though finals are concluding, student services is available on campus to provide support to any student who may need assistance."
Detectives did not have any suspect information to share as of Wednesday morning.
