5-year-old child dies after accidental, self-inflicted shooting on Indy’s northwest side

The incident happened just after 11 p.m. Aug. 18 near West 46th Street and Moller Road.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after a child died from his injuries in an apparent self-inflicted shooting on Indianapolis' northwest side Sunday night.

The incident was reported shortly after 11 p.m. Aug. 18 in the 4500 block of Golden Meadow Drive, near West 46th Street and Moller Road. 

Responding officers located a male child under the age of 10 with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, an IMPD spokesperson told 13News. Police said he accidentally shot himself after getting a gun in a bedroom.

The child was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis in critical condition.

On Monday, Aug. 26, the Marion County Coroner's Office confirmed the child died from his injuries and identified him as 5-year-old Jayden Ewing.

The boy's mother and brother were inside the home at the time of the incident and are cooperating with investigators, the spokesperson said.

"If you're going to have a gun in the house, it needs to have a lock on it, especially when our children's lives are at stake," Capt. John Arvin said.

The incident remains under investigation.
