INDIANAPOLIS — The Marion County Coroner's office said 15-year-old Keleante Brewer died in a shooting on the northeast side of Indianapolis Tuesday night.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the shooting happened in the 9800 block of Ellis Drive, near East 42nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road, around 8 p.m.
Medics transported Brewer to the hospital in critical condition, but police said he died from his injuries.
Brewer was a student at the James and Rosemary Phalen Leadership Academy on the far east side of Indianapolis. The school shared the following statement Wednesday afternoon:
"We are devastated to learn about the passing of our scholar, Keleante Brewer. He was an excellent student who came from a great family. He was also a part of our JRP family. We love our scholars here, and we are all grieving this loss - not just the loss for our school family, but the loss of who Keleante could have become.
We work every day in our schools to shield our scholars and to prepare them for life - we should never have to prepare them for this. We will continue to work to protect and improve the lives of our scholars. We also continue to call for action from the city and other leaders in preventing this senseless violence."
No other information about the shooting, including a possible motive or suspect, is known at this time.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
