44-year-old man killed in shooting on Indy's near north side

The shooting happened around 6:30 a.m. Thursday in the 3300 block of North Kenwood Avenue, near West 34th and North Illinois streets.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after one person was killed in a shooting on Indianapolis' near north side Thursday morning.

Shortly before 6:30 a.m. Jan. 18, officers were called to the 3300 block of North Kenwood Avenue, near North Illinois and West 34th streets, for a report of a person shot.

Officers arrived and located a man who had been shot. Medics took that person to a local hospital in critical condition.

Around 9:15 a.m., an IMPD spokesperson said the victim had been pronounced dead.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 44-year-old Alfred Wombles.

The spokesperson previously confirmed officers detained one person in connection to the incident but "their involvement is still unclear at this time."

After consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, the person who was detained and believed to be responsible for the shooting was released, pending further investigation.

Neighbors believe this was a case of another possible break-in, and that the alleged shooter reportedly found a man inside of his garage.

"Everybody knows that the crime numbers are high. The violence numbers are high, and I think people are concerned about their safety. So we have more people carrying their weapons out of fear that something may happen to them," said Rev. Dr. Charles Harrison, of the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition.

When Harrison is not preaching at Barned United Methodist Church, he's working with a team to keep the streets safe.

While it isn't clear exactly what happened in this incident, Harrison says he has noticed a change in the area.

"When we're out patrolling with Ten Point, I don't ever remember seeing as many people visibly carrying a weapon like I see now. And really this happened over the last three to four years," Harrison said. "I think it's in correlation with the rise in shootings and homicides that more people are just not feeling safe, and because of that, more people are carrying guns."

Anyone with additional information on the incident is asked to contact Detective Ronald Sayles at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email him at Ronald.Sayles@indy.gov. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
