Indianapolis, December 30, 2002 - It’s an interesting walk for sheriff-elect Frank Anderson.  “Sometimes I have to pinch myself to know I’ve come full circle,” says Anderson, who first served the county as a deputy before a long career with the U.S. Marshals Service.

On election night, he proudly proclaimed himself the new sheriff in town.  Monday that really began to sink in.

Actually the former Marshal of the Year for Indiana’s Southern District is getting a clear picture of the biggest problem he will be facing after he's sworn in.  The picture is clear in just two words - jail overcrowding.

“I've been in the cell blocks, talked to inmates,” Anderson says. “I'm going to go to work on that.”

Before Monday, the last time Anderson put on a sheriff’s uniform was 1965, “It fits pretty good doesn’t it?  (It’s the) same one I had years ago,” Anderson says.  “I'm very proud to wear that uniform.  I'm going to wear it with dignity.”

It looks like a comfortable fit.

Anderson says he just couldn't stand by with all things going on in the world and the experience he possesses to not step up “at the people’s call and serve them.”  He promises he’ll do that with “dignity and professionalism.”

Outgoing Sheriff Jack Cottey declined to be interviewed about the transition but Anderson says it's going well.
