Carmel, March 15 - The Carmel City Council debated a proposal that would ban vinyl and aluminum siding for new homes.
Supporters of the ban, like Mayor Jim Brainard, say vinyl siding could lower property values in Carmel.
But several home builders argued vinyl is a low-maintenance material they use for affordable housing.
Roger Stevens of the Builders Association of Indianapolis told the council, "We also, more importantly, believe it limits the choice of the homeowners to choose a maintenance free exterior to their house."
The council voted unanimously to send the proposal back to committee for more study.
