Bargain or bust? Testing out the products at a local liquidator | What's the Deal?

Liquidators buy returns, overstocks from retailers and sell them at a discount.

BROWNSBURG, Ind. — If time is money, Cheryl says her four-hour roundtrip drive to Brownsburg is worth roughly 80% in discounts.

"I bought all this stuff for my daughter's new apartment, and it's just really been a huge cost savings," Cheryl said.

Items wind up at AllSurplus Deals because they are returned, overstocked or discontinued.

"I also got a refrigerator for my garage," Cheryl said. "I would say 80% to 90% of everything has been good."

We, too, wanted to test out the product quality and potential savings when shopping liquidations.

To shop at this warehouse, you need to place bids online.

We won a Lego set for $23 instead of $54, a Shark hair dryer for $71 instead of $179, a bike for $38 instead of $220, and an ottoman for $12 instead of $135.

The prices we paid include the item, taxes and a 15% fee.

Items need to be picked up by appointment within three days of paying at their Brownsburg location. Our appointment got rescheduled, which is rare, according to an AllSurplus representative.

Once we arrived, we got to work testing everything since refunds are not allowed after you leave the warehouse.

For instance, we plugged the hair dryer into an outlet on the side of the building to ensure it worked correctly.

All of the items were good to go except for the bike. That had a wobbly wheel, so we left it onsite and received a refund.

The best bargain was the ottoman at about 90% off, followed by the Shark dryer at 60% off and the Lego set at 57% off.

Jeff Rechtzigel, with AllSurplus Deals, said 16%  of everything that gets sold comes back in a return.

"We help to create value out of those returns by reselling them to people who want great deals," Rechtzigel said.

He said they sell anything that could be sold at a retail store, including furniture, electronics and sporting goods.

"We've been here in Brownsburg for just a few months," Rechtzigel said. "We recently expanded after having been in Plainfield for 17 years."

If you want to shop at liquidators without the bidding process, Bulldog Liquidators and Barton's Discounts are in-person, local options.
