These moves may save you money on airfare | What's the Deal?

If you're taking to the skies over the holidays, getting a good price is important.

INDIANAPOLIS — Holiday airfare often comes with a high price tag.

Katy Nastro with Going.com said that is why it is important to book sooner rather than later.

To save money on a Thanksgiving flight, consider heading out the morning of the holiday.

"People are honestly already at their destination, and you can save upwards of 20 to 30%, sometimes, on average," Nastro said.

If you are looking at December, set price alerts with tools like Google Flights or Hopper.

On Google Flights, select "track prices," and you will get email notifications on price changes. To track prices, you need to be signed into Google.

You can also look for their new, colorful badge that indicates a flight is part of their Google Price Guarantee pilot program. That means if you buy a flight and it drops in price, Google will deposit the difference into your Google Pay after the wheels lift.

"It really is a set it and forget it, which we love, but it's not available all the time for every flight that you're looking at," Nastro said.

As for Hopper, that is an app that will push notifications on your phone if the price drops, as well as tell you if a price is good.

Another savings hack to consider applies to airfare tickets that are not considered basic fare. Basic fares do not allow any changes.

If the ticket price drops after you book it, ask the carrier to rebook you on the same flight and provide you with an airline credit for the price difference.

While this feature is kept quiet, it is worth reaching out on the airline's app.

If you are concerned about flying Spirit Airlines because of their bankruptcy rumblings, Nasto said those plans are not definite. She added that bankruptcy does not mean the company is going under. You will, however, want to watch for possible changes.
