INDIANAPOLIS — Even though it is still summer, now is the time to buy for winter airfare.
That is because we are in what the travel experts at Going call the "Goldilocks window" for the winter peak season.
For domestic flights, that means booking your ticket three to seven months before travel. For international flights, it is four to 10 months in advance.
"The most reliable way to get a cheaper flight in a peak season, like the winter holidays, is to book in the opposite season. So, book in the summer," Katy Nastro, with Going, said. "Much like swimsuits that go on sale in the middle of winter, when nobody is thinking about going swimming. Very, very similar."
To help you get the best deals on holiday or Presidents Day flights, set alerts on price-tracking apps or sites including Hopper and Google Flights.
Nastro added that good deals can be found on international travel around Thanksgiving because it's a U.S. holiday.
The Goldilocks window for off-peak travel is one to three months out for domestic, and two to eight months for international.
