How to sign up for Christmas gift assistance

Allison Gormly takes a look at how Hoosiers can get help with their holiday shopping.

INDIANAPOLIS — Now is the time to reach out if your family needs help with holiday gifts.

To find assistance, call 211, or visit Indiana's 211 website.

Indiana 211 is a free service that confidentially connects Hoosiers with resources and assistance. On the site, residents can find a tab labeled "holiday help."

Just enter your ZIP code and the site will show opportunities in your area.

Tara Morse, executive director for Indiana 211, said they already have registrations open for some of the programs that are available.

"During the holidays, we also want people to have a sense of pride, and maybe they're in a situation that, 'I can't buy a toy for my child this year because I need gas to get to work,'" Morse said.

Eligibility may differ from group to group.

"Some of them, you just need to get on the list. Some of them, you have to live in a certain township," Morse said.

Families in need can also reach out to their local church about holiday sponsorships.

If you would like to donate items to a family in need, you can use the same online list and reach out to the organizations directly. Indiana 211 will not connect donors to nonprofits.

Just put that on your to-do list sooner rather than later, so the organization can plan to help more people.
