INDIANAPOLIS — Sometimes, it is hard to part with our belongings. Kathleen Burgess knows the feeling. But Burgess leaves everything she will part with at the Citizens' Transfer Station in Southwest Indy at 2324 S. Belmont Ave. And it saves her money.
"It is $5 a dump. So how can you beat it," Burgess said.
The Citizens' Transfer station is open to the public Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. It is $5 cash for a pickup truck load and $2 for a car load. You can make up to two trips per day.
U-Hauls and trailers are a no-no.
"Other places, it's a lot more expensive, and they don't keep it as neat and clean, so you get nails in your tires," Burgess explained.
Items that the dump takes include household trash, furniture, tires, leaves only, and washers and dryers.
Things they'll refuse: building material, tree limbs, brush and TV's and computers. TVs and computer's go to city Tox Drops .
Auboni Hart with Indianapolis Department of Public Works said curbside pickup is also an option for heavy trash and it's included with your trash services.
"The Earth needs you to do the right thing," Hart said.
Like an arcade game, a giant claw comes out of a truck by on your designated day and grabs large items like bikes and tree limbs, buffets and more. To find out your day head to 'trash pickup' on indy.gov.
"You go to the website, you click, get started and put in your address. That's all you have to do," Hart said.
Helping you get trash to the right place when it's time to say goodbye.
Citizens' Transfer Station customers warned that the line can be long. Burgess advises to come a little later in the day. It's the same trend we saw with Tox Drop days: early mornings get crowded.
