How to get food, gift assistance this holiday season | What's the Deal?

How to track down local help whether you are on the receiving end or the giving end.

INDIANAPOLIS — It is a three-digit phone number that leads people to help. But, it is probably not the three-digit number you are thinking of.

The number is 211.

Indiana 211's executive director Tara Morse said the number's purpose is to connect people to resources within their communities.

Right now, she said they are prepping holiday resources.

"We have over 250 holiday resources available in our database right now for November and December of this year. Some of those are free turkey giveaways, some of those are Thanksgiving meals, Christmas stores," Morse said.

These are giveaways that provide both help and heart.

"I think it gives the families some dignity," Morse said. "It's giving their child something, something new, something they didn't have."

211 is not just an Indiana thing. The resource line is available to about 99% of the U.S. population.

To reach the resources, you can call 211 or text your zip code to "898-211."

You can also click "Seasonal" at the button on their website.

It is also worth reaching out to your place of worship to see if they're hosting any assistance programs.

If you are looking to donate, some of the places accepting toy donations include the YMCA, Salvation Army and Menards.
