INDIANAPOLIS — Summer weather is around the corner, which means we are about to produce more fruits and vegetables domestically.
Lori Taylor, founder of The Produce Moms, said that allows us to have both higher quality and an abundant supply.
"In turn, that typically brings the price down," Taylor said.
We went shopping with Taylor, who showed us the ins and outs of the produce department.
She said another reason the price drops is because the food isn't traveling as far.
"If you are moving that produce from South America to here in the Midwest, there's more costs associated with the freight and the logistics," Taylor said.
According to Taylor, summer stone fruit — or fruit with a pit — will take center stage soon. That includes peaches, plums and nectarines.
Summer vegetables include asparagus and sweet corn.
"Asparagus is going to continue to be a very promotable item," Taylor said.
Promotable items — or what's on sale — will often be front and center of the store, according to Taylor. If your favorites are not on sale yet, substitute.
For example, a backup plan for Cosmic Crisp apples, Taylor said, include Gala or Fuji apples.
As for red onions, a backup would be white or yellow onions.
The frozen section is another place to find substitutes and save money.
Right now, frozen blueberries are cheaper than fresh.
"There will certainly be a time here in the near future where your fresh blueberries are going to be more affordable than the frozen because it's growing season," Taylor said.
It's all about saving money until the sun shifts and warms up.
