Credit, refund options if you're postponing a Florida trip

If you planned to visit certain parts of Florida, you may be looking for a backup plan.

INDIANAPOLIS — If Hurricane Milton impacts Florida the way meteorologists are predicting, it will affect travel to the state for a while.

For those traveling sooner rather than later, there are likely more options.

If your flight is not outright cancelled, airlines will offer travel waivers.

That means you could get a credit that needs to be used within a certain time frame.

Beyond that travel waiver time period, airline change options may come down to the type of ticket you bought.

As for overnight stays, reach out to the place where you booked the reservation.

Expedia and Hotels.com said they issued travel waivers and activated policies to help travelers.

If you rented a home in certain areas, VRBO and AirBnB enacted their extenuating circumstances policy, so refunds are an option.

Katy Nastro with Going.com said this is not an additional cost you needed to add on a booking.

"This is a very specific scenario, like a natural disaster, where there's an evacuation order in place, for example, that just would not allow anybody to be able to stay," Nastro said.

If you have a "cancel for any reason insurance policy" and you have a trip planned for Thanksgiving, start reading through your options now.

If you booked travel on a credit card, you may also have additional protections through them.
