Cars with the best resale value, according to Kelley Blue Book

Every year, Kelley Blue Book projects and ranks which makes and model can get consumers the most money when it is time to trade or sell the vehicle.

INDIANAPOLIS — Most of us consider a handful of factors when it is time to shop for a car.

For some, a key factor is the vehicle's resale value.

Each year, Kelley Blue Book projects and ranks which makes and model can get consumers the most money when it is time to trade or sell the vehicle.

Senior editor Brian Moody said if you get a car with an average resale value, you are no better and no worse than what everybody else is getting.

"But if it's really important to you to get as much as you can at the end of that life of the car, then yes, looking for something with a high resale value is important," Moody said.

The car's desirability, supply and reliability all go into figuring out what vehicles make their award list.

Over a five-year period of time, Moody said vehicles are worth, on average, 45% of their original sticker price.

Cars with a good resale value are worth more than the 45% average.

"For example, if you were to look at a Toyota Tundra, it's worth 73% of its original value," Moody said.

That is why the Toyota Tundra holds the number one spot on KBB's 10 Best Overall Resale Values of 2023.

Behind the Tundra is a tie between the Toyota Tacoma and Tesla Model X, both of which are expected to hold 66% of their sticker price.

Rounding out the top five are the Ford Bronco, averaging 65.4% of its original value, and Chevy Corvette at 65.3%.

It is important to remember your car's trade-in value is real money. That is why sellers should get competing offers from online dealers like Carmax and Carvana, in addition to going to a dealer.
