CHICAGO — Buying an American-made car still matters to a lot of consumers.
Aaron Bragman, with Cars.com, said 69% of the people they surveyed said that is either somewhat or very important to them.
"A lot of consumers still think that it is a very important thing for them to have a vehicle that contributes significantly to the American economy and to the American job creation," Bragman said.
Each year, Cars.com breaks down the 100 most American-made cars using a few factors.
"Where is it made, where the components that make up the vehicle come from, who's actually making it, how big is the workforce," Bragman said.
In 2023, the top 4 cars are all electric and from Tesla:
- Tesla Model Y
- Tesla Model 3
- Tesla Model X
- Tesla Model S
- Honda Passport
- Volkswagen ID.4
- Honda Odyssey
- Acura MDX
- Honda Ridgeline
- Acura RDX
While they did not rank as highly, American automakers still had a lot of vehicles on the list.
"General Motors actually had the most at 18%," Bragman said, "The second place on that list is actually a three-way tie between Ford, Toyota and Honda."
U.S. manufacturing is top of mind in part because of the tax incentives on electric cars.
"That vehicle has to now follow a number of certain requirements in terms of where it's made and the parts content that's made in order to qualify for the tax incentives," Bragman said. "So that, more than anything, is starting to drive a lot of automakers decisions and planning."
These decisions and planning could lead to more cars being made in America.
