KOKOMO, Ind. (WTHR) — A new $86 million business and sports development is in the works for Kokomo.

Henke Development Group — the company responsible for Westfield's Grand Park Sports Complex — plans to invest $77 million into the Kokomo project. The plan is to transform lots on the city's east side near US 31 into business, office, retail, hotel and restaurant space.

The city would invest the remaining $9 million into eight new multi-purpose, artificial turf baseball and softball fields — four high-school sized and four youth league-sized — at Darrough Chapel Park. The fields would also include concessions and other amenities.

The city said parts of the park would remain intact, including the Veteran's Memorial at the entrance.

City leaders expect the fields to promote growth in youth baseball and softball teams in the area.

Former MLB player and Kokomo native Joe Thatcher said the development will be a positive for Kokomo's baseball community.

"A facility of this size and quality will allow the development of softball and baseball programs locally ot excel to levels they've never seen," Thatcher said.
