West side company turns focus on workplace safety during pandemic

The owners of a west Indianapolis company are offering tools to other companies to help keep their workplace safe.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The owners of a west Indianapolis company are offering tools to other companies to help keep their workplace safe.

Employees at Diversity Press on West 10th Street in Indianapolis are trying to work as normal as possible.

“We had to change our hours, cut back hours, we had to cut back days,” said Darrell Johnson, president of Diversity Press.

Although their business never shut down completely, business itself did slow down. The pandemic impacted a lot of their customers. Despite cutting back hours for employees at Diversity Press, having a safer workplace is priority during the pandemic.

“So we started thinking of ways that we could be essential, and one of the ways we did that was produce hand sanitizer and any kind of PPE essentials," Johnson said.

Johnson recommends personal-sized hand sanitizer bottles to limit sharing. Almost every workplace has locations where multiple employees touch the same spots. Those spots vary from copy machines to water fountains to shared computers and more obvious things, like doorknobs.

Another tool is a contact-less door opener for employees, which you add to a keychain. The contact-less door opener can be used for so much more and away from the job as well.

“It can be used for things like a keypad entry,” said Johnson, “or a lot of people have push button codes on their vehicles."

Another popular back-to-work tool is a reusable forehead thermometer. Diversity Press employee Ronni Jones works the front desk. Safety crews installed plexiglass at the desk Wednesday afternoon to help keep her safe. She demonstrated how the forehead thermometer works and was able to share her temperature with 13News in less than 15 seconds, which measured 95 degrees.

Another way to practice social distancing are markers that measure and mark off 6 feet. Diversity Press makes heavy duty floor stickers that are not only eye catching, but instant reminders. There are many more back to work safety tools on the Diversity Press website.

Johnson believes with Indiana moving forward with lifting more restrictions on gathering and business crowds, there is no place to take workplace safety lightly.

“When it comes to just knowing you’re safe at work,” he said, “that's very important, because we want everybody to feel safe."
