INDIANAPOLIS — Starbucks will return to downtown Indianapolis as part of a new development.

The former downtown Starbucks on Monument Circle closed in October 2022 citing "safety concerns."

The new location will be part of the renovation at 30 South Meridian. The building itself will receive extensive upgrades, with the Starbucks store taking the building's ground level.

Completion of the project is slated for sometime in 2024.

“The upgrades to 30 South Meridian reflect our commitment to growth, adaptation, and meeting the ever-evolving needs of our diverse tenants," said Tom McGowan, president and COO of Kite Realty Group. "“The addition of Starbucks accentuates the premium atmosphere we aim to provide."

Starbucks said in 2022, the closure of the downtown location at 55 Monument Circle was centered around safety.

"There are a number of factors we consider when closing a store, and safety is one of them," a Starbucks spokesperson told 13News. "The incidents at this store are at a level that we don't feel we can provide a warm and safe experience that people expect when they go to a Starbucks location."

In July 2022, Starbucks announced it was closing 16 stores around the country because of repeated safety issues, including drug use and other disruptive behaviors that threaten staff. The closed locations were in Seattle (six), Los Angeles (six), Portland, Oregon (two), Philadelphia (one) and Washington (one).
