ANDERSON, Ind. (Herald Bulletin) – The Cook family confirmed Thursday that Mounds Mall will close effective April 1.
Jonathan Cook, family spokesman, told The Herald Bulletin the reason for the closing, after 53 years, is obvious with economic conditions changing. He said the loss of Carson’s earlier this year meant the Mounds Mall had recently lost two major anchor tenants.
Cook said the Mounds Mall 10 Theatre and Dr. David Tavel's office will remain open because they have exterior entrances.
Hayden Benbow, manager of Mounds 10, said the plan is for the cinema to stay open, turn the box office around to the exterior of the mall and add an entrance.
Hannah Erli , general manager at Garfield’s, confirmed that the restaurant has closed and that the mall is closing April 1. Erli said they were made aware of it on Monday by mall management.
"All the staff are going to miss our guests a lot,” she said. “There were a lot of people we didn't get a chance to say goodbye to.”
Jeremy Parker, owner of the Squeeze Play in the mall, said he was a freshman in college when he opened the store there in 1990. He said the store is special to him, but he has no plans to relocate in Anderson at this time.
